The types of humanitarian crisis drivers, their dimensions and dynamics are growing, in some instances, exponentially. This theme has frequently been explored in reports, survey reviews and meetings that have been part of the FOREWARN Initiative. In reflecting on this theme, there has been general agreement that the complexities driving future humanitarian crises will mean that a far greater range of disciplines and expertise will be required to prevent, or at least mitigate crisis impacts. Reducing longer- term disaster risks will demand far greater inter-disciplinary collaboration. This discussion paper is intended to focus principally on the ECOWAS Commission’s interest in promoting cross-directorate collaboration and the perceived benefits of such an approach.
