Organisational Self Assessment Tool (OSAT)

The Organisational Self-Assessment Tool (OSAT) is used by the HFP to help an organisation identify areas where it may be able to strengthen its current capacities to deal with the future. The OSAT asks for respondents’ perceptions of future humanitarian crises, as well as their views on their organisation’s current capacities for strategic leadership and to be anticipatory, adaptive, innovative and collaborative.

To date the OSAT has been completed by over 200 people from 15 organisations, both independently and as part of HFP partner assessments. The OSAT can be administered as a stand-alone activity or in conjunction with the HFP’s Making Futures Real workshop (MFR) and Key Informant Interviews (KIIs). The OSAT can also be used by a group or an organisation over time to help it assess the extent to which it has changed or been able to integrate futures thinking and measures into its work and structure.

‘We conducted the OSAT survey on an initial small sample of a cross-section of staff at Tearfund and shared the results with our Leadership Team. An outline proposal to establish a “futures group” that would inform future strategic planning was warmly received. We will now set about setting up such a group drawn from across the organisation to inform future strategy meetings of our Leadership Team.
We recognised, however, that identifying future trends is only part of the story. The survey clearly showed that we need to become more responsive to the trends we identify. The Leadership Team prioritised the key external trends which we will need to get to grips with top-down over the coming year. We also recognised that we need to make further changes to the organisation and culture of the organisation so that we can become more agile and responsive on a day-to-day basis to external events as they occur.’
Ian Causebrook, Corporate Change Manager, Tearfund UK

The OSAT questionnaire is designed primarily as part of the overall assessment that the HFP carries out with our partner organisations, but we are very happy for it to be used independently. The questionnaire can be downloaded from the bottom of this page. If you would like help in how to begin, how to analyse the results or how to use the OSAT within a wider strategic planning process, please contact the HFP office on info@humanitarianfutures.org

In this questionnaire we are interested in people’s own opinions and impressions about their organisation. Respondents should answer with their personal view and are not expected to represent the views of the whole organisation.
