Key Informant Interviews (Kii)
Key Informant Interviews (Kii) are structured interviews that can be administered as one-to-one or group conversations. The Kiis can be conducted in tandem with the OSAT providing more in-depth information on a group or organisation’s perceptions on its capacity to address future humanitarian crises and threats.
As part of its work with partner organisations the HFP will usually administer the OSAT and conduct a series of Kiis. Generally, the Kii questions are tailored to the particular group or organisation the HFP is working with, focusing on perceptions on the future and the five HFP capacities: anticipation, adaptation, innovation, collaboration and strategic leadership.
The following are some examples of the types of questions that could be included in a Kii to explore futures issues:
- When you think about the next 10–15 years, what are the key future humanitarian issues for your country?
- What is your organisation currently doing to address those issues? Why? Why not?
- From what sources does your organisation gather data on future threats? What happens to the information? Who analyses it? How is it used?
- How does your organisation collaborate internally? What are the mechanisms and incentives to promote this?
- Who are some of your key external partners, and what form does the collaboration take?
- Are the types of issues raised in the OSAT the things that people think about on a daily basis? Why? Why not?
