Third Pole report launch
Presented by: HFP
Date and time: 19th May 2010, House of Lords, Westminster
A highly successful launch of the Waters of the Third Pole report took place at the House of Lords attended by an invited audience of scientists, humanitarian policy makers and politicians. The report is a policy study about one of the greatest potential threats the global system will face in the foreseeable future. The guest speaker was the Government’s chief scientist, Professor John Beddington, who welcomed the report as a “terrific initiative”. Co-authors of the report gave an outline of the conclusions and recommendations - UCL earth scientist, Dr. Stephen Edwards, Editor of chinadialogue, Isabel Hilton, and the Director of the HFP, Dr. Randolph Kent.
The audience was told that a fifth of the world’s population - from Pakistan and India through to China and Bangladesh – is currently vulnerable to a range of human-induced and natural crises that stem directly or indirectly from Asia’s water towers.
Lord Dubs, a former Government Minister who now serves on the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Human Rights, hosted the event and urged the audience members to use their influence to raise awareness of the needs of the Third Pole region.
