Visit from the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Civil Affairs

Presented by: Humanitarian Futures Programme
Date and time: 9th March 2010 @ 11.30-14.00

The Humanitarian Futures Programme and partners were delighted to welcome a delegation from the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Civil Affairs, Chinese Red Cross, Beijing SOS Children’s Village and the Beijing Charity Association. The purpose of the delegation’s visit to the United Kingdom is to gain insights into the types of research undertaken in the UK about emergency preparedness and management for dealing with natural hazards and disaster monitoring and warning.

The programme was divided into two sections. The first dealt with broad trends in hazards research, preparedness and prevention; the second focused on the British government’s general role in disaster management and relief. Participating in the briefing was  ALNAP, China Dialogue, Aon Benfield UCL Hazard Research Centre, Overseas Development Institute’s Humanitarian Policy Group, King’s College London’s Humanitarian Futures Programme, ELRHA, RedR and the King’s China Institute.

The programme was designed to give short introductions to the work of participating organisations – focused around the themes of hazards research at a global level and in the UK – and to ensure maximum exchange of ideas between the delegation and those organisations participating in the meeting.
