BRAC – Humanitarian Futures Programme Preliminary Futures Assessment

This report summarises a preliminary mission with BRAC which took place from 25 April to 4 May 2009. The mission was designed with a twofold objective: to provide an opportunity to further familiarise HFP staff with BRAC’s work and approach; and to provide the opportunity to test out selected HFP tools to support BRAC to self-assess its own capacity to anticipate and prepare for future humanitarian crises. This report should be seen as a starting point for discussions to identify specific ways in which ‘futures capacity’ can support BRAC’s mission and how this capacity can be embedded into its ongoing programming strategies and approaches.
The recent creation of the Disasters Environment and Climate Change Programme (DECC) demonstrates BRAC’s commitment to be an organisation that fosters new and innovative approaches to improve the lives of the poorest and most vulnerable in Bangladesh and elsewhere in the world in a sustainable manner. In this context, BRAC is uniquely qualified and positioned to provide leadership on how futures capacities can help to address the complexity of humanitarian and development issues and challenges that 21st-century organisations will increasingly face
